An intensive introduction for anyone who wishes to learn the basic technology and technique of vitreous enamelling

07-10 April 08

Ask Angela on 01543 450596 to enquire.

The Course will deal with the basic principles of all aspects of vitreous enamelling through lectures, practical work, demonstrations and visits to plants involved in the use and application of vitreous enamel. The course covers a wide syllabus, which includes the science, the technology, the application and the uses of vitreous enamel. The range of theory and practice has been extended to give four days of intensive education and even more practical experience.

The Course is intended both for new entrants to the industry or to the process and also for those already involved in it who wish to further their range of knowledge or to increase their awareness of the science, technology and practices involved in the vitreous enamelling industry. Benefits may also be gained by the attendance of designers or users of vitreous enamelled products who wish to advance their personal understanding of the advantages, applications, the design constraints and limitations of the finish and the processes involved.

The Course involves a high degree of interaction with the other delegates as part of the learning process, and thus can only be offered on a fully residential basis. Delegates completing the course will be offered a certificate of attendance. This course is regarded by the industry as the standard entry-level training. Places are very strictly limited to ten, due to the nature of the course and so early booking is essential to avoid disappointment. We will take a pre-reservation to secure places.

Syllabus Of Lectures

Introduction To Vitreous Enamelling
General survey of the vitreous enamelling process in relation to competitive finishes. Design concepts for parts to be enamelled.

The History Of Vitreous Enamelling
The history of vitreous enamels from early days in the Middle East and China, to the development of industrialisation and the present day.

Vitreous Enamel Frits
The formulation of the development of the specialised glasses known as vitreous enamel frits. How they relate to other glasses – the differences, the requirements, their production and their physical and chemical properties.

Basis Metals And Their Pre-Treatment
Cast Iron, sheet steel and other basis metals will be evaluated – their quality requirements, their chemistry and metallurgy.

The principles of pre-treatment, including shot blasting, pickling and the degrease only system.

Milling And Preparation Of Vitreous Enamels
Wet and dry milling processes – the theory and practice of ball milling, the purpose of mill additions, the formulation of vitreous enamel slips and the quality and process control systems required.

Application Systems And Fusing
Methods of application of vitreous enamels by hand and automatically – dipping, flow coating, hand spraying, automatic and electrostatic spraying, electrophoresis and powder systems. The equipment and plant requirements. Drying of the wet coating and firing of the dried slip or powder.
