A.J Wells & Sons Vitreous Enamellers is a privately owned family company, based in Newport on the Isle of Wight. The firm is famously remembered for its televised contribution to the 2004 Chelsea Flower show in the way of enameled balls for Diarmuid Gavin’s controversial entry - more info. The company’s portfolio however goes way beyond ‘balls’ and its diverse range of work has now established it as one of the leading vitreous enamellers in Europe.
It all began in 1972 when the late Alfred J Wells and two of his sons set up a small engineering business. Initially they started out manufacturing woodburning stoves under the brand name Charnwood. As the business expanded the family took the decision to bring more of the manufacturing processes in house.
It was at this point the vitreous enamelling division was established with the very latest in enamel technology – including in-house milling, spraying, printing and furnacing. The plant then rapidly expanded into other areas of enamelling. Signage and graphics, sheet steel, cast iron and architectural panels were just some of the areas the business moved into. In addition to individual commissions, ongoing contracts with numerous transport companies were secured which in turn established A.J Wells as one of the largest vitreous enamellers in the UK.
The modern, purpose built plant now boasts state of the art laser profiling, high precision metal fabrication, a framing & electrical section and a full design & survey studio.
A fervent supporter of local and British industry, A.J Wells continue to branch out in the diverse world of vitreous enamel. As general manager David Gatrell says, ‘Whilst we still proudly enamel our world renowned Charnwood stoves, this plays a very small part in ever expanding portfolio of work. From burners to balls we can do it all!’
